Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I start working with you?

There are two ways in. Subscribe to the Philo-surfy Zine to get weekly surf optimization content and stay connected until you're ready for deeper work. Or book a consult if you're ready to discuss intensives, trips, or ongoing coaching.

Do you coach complete beginners?

Yes, I coach all levels. From never having surfed before to wanting to perform a whole repertoire of advanced maneuvers. The training is different for every level. We customize your program to meet you where you're at.

Do I have to be in the New York area to get coaching?

Absolutely not. I've designed my program so people all over the world can benefit from this system. I can coach you remotely from wherever you're at, and then you can meet me in New York for an intensive or join me at one of my international trip destinations. The system is built for maximum flexibility.

Programming & Sessions

What's the minimum commitment for ongoing coaching?

Ongoing coaching requires a 3-month minimum commitment. This gives us enough time to build real momentum and see meaningful progress. We'll discuss the right structure for your goals on a consult call.

Do I need to do the exercises in the SurfReady365 app?

You don't need to do the exercises in the SurfReady365 app. But if you do the exercises in the app, which is a major part of the coaching, you will get better at surfing faster—in whatever way that looks like for you.

Do I have to do nutrition programming?

Not at all. That's up to you. Some clients want the whole holistic package—fitness, nutrition, mindset—and for them I write meal plans and help optimize nutrition for health and surfing long-term. Others just want the surf-specific training.

How do coaching calls work?

Coaching calls are scheduled through the SurfReady365 app and provide the essential accountability and support you need to achieve your surfing and health goals. A coaching call can serve many purposes:

  • Review footage of yourself surfing for technique analysis
  • Assess form and progression in your SurfReady365 exercises
  • Plan upcoming surf trips and set goals
  • Block schedule your week to make time for workouts, nutrition, and surfing
  • Provide accountability and troubleshoot any challenges you're facing
  • Adjust programming based on your progress and feedback

These calls ensure you stay consistent and motivated while working toward your surfing and health objectives.

What if I don't have access to a gym?

Perfect—you don't need access to a gym. The SurfReady365 system is designed to be adaptable to whatever you have available, whether it's your living room, a beach, or a full gym.

Can you modify workouts if I have an injury?

Yes, we will modify the workouts if you have an injury. We'll consult with as much of your PT and medical team as needed to make sure you're not doing anything to reinjure yourself.

In-Person Sessions & Equipment

How much advance notice do I need to book a session?

You don't need much time in advance. If you see waves that you want to surf, you can always reach out—even the day of. If I'm booked, I'm booked, but I try to be flexible with good surf forecasts. Learning to read forecasts is part of the system.

Do you provide equipment?

That varies location to location. In New York, I can provide surfboards—both soft and hard. I never provide wetsuits. I believe that you should own your own wetsuit. On surf trips internationally, I do not provide any equipment at all whatsoever. I can help you source a surfboard for rental locally, or help you with the logistics of bringing your board to the spot we will be surfing.

How do international trips work?

Check the trips page to see current destinations and dates. I help you plan logistics for arrival, departure, and equipment. We make sure we're all up to speed on your ability level and that you have appropriate expectations for the trip. Book a consult to discuss trip options.

Do you coach at a specific location in New York?

I'm based in Rockaway Beach, but I'm not beholden to any particular jetty or sandbar. I'm always checking conditions and moving around so that we can get the premium conditions for your specific progress. I also take little strike trips to New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Long Island—within reason on the East Coast.

Are you CPR certified and what safety measures do you take?

Yes, I am CPR certified. I've never had to perform CPR, thank goodness, because we try to nail the safety in the beginning by reading the ocean correctly and learning to control our surfboards. It's my strong belief that the preparation we put in with mindset, ocean reading, wave judgment, and board control are the safety precautions we're taking. I never put you in conditions I don't feel you can handle or that I can't rescue you out of. If a freak accident happens, I know at any given time where the nearest clinic or hospital is, and I will take you directly there or call the fire department or local medical services.

Do you coach kids?

I'm open to coaching children, but I treat them like adults. So I'm probably not the best fit for children—you're probably better off with some kind of camp. But I will do it if the kid wants to do the whole programming.

Do you offer group sessions?

I don't do large groups. I never coach more than 3 people at a time in the water. That's where I cap it off. Friend rates for trips and intensives can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

Will my session be private or semi-private?

The ocean is unpredictable. I always make sure that if I have to go semi-private because conditions force it or we're on a trip, everybody will benefit from the session. That's part of my approach—strategy and planning things correctly so you don't have to clean up the mess after.

Results & Expectations

How quickly will I see improvement in my surfing?

You should start to see improvement right away. In terms of doing the surf-specific workouts, you should start to feel improvement in your pop-up after about 3 to 4 weeks. In-water sessions with me will give you immediate improvement—you should be about 40% better than where you were before that session. Fixing bad habits takes longer, though. Bad habits learned through neglect or poor education are the hardest and take the longest to correct.

Do you guarantee results?

Yes, I guarantee results—but you have to do the work. If I prescribe the work and you do it, you're going to get results 100%. I guarantee the work that I prescribe. 80 to 100% compliance with my prescriptions guarantees results. If you comply less than 80%, you'll get no results or spotty results. I've never seen anybody not progress as expected when they follow the program.
